The Rock of Carlat

The Rock of Carlat is a major place steeped in history. In olden days, a huge fortress had risen there, renowned to become “the most formidable citadel” of all South of France.

The fortress peaked its greatest splendour under the aegis of Jacques d’Armagnac, childhood companion of Louis XI, and his wife Louise d’Anjou, first cousin and goddaughter of the king. A century later, Queen Margot came to stay when she was in exile. She left an unforgettable memory all around the Carladès region…
In 1603, Henri IV ordered to destroy the citadel and nowadays, there only remains minuscule traces of this majestic construction. The town hall exposes a model. As for the rock, it henceforth belongs to Prince Albert II of Monaco.
However, in summer 2017, the fortress will be brought to life…through a VR-Visit, the result of a superb project involving the local authority of Aurillac (CABA) and the village of Carlat. Come and enjoy an unprecedented and fun experience! Plunge into the heart of the daily life of these figures and their adventures, who have marked the citadel history … and the History of France!
